In this time I have also used other web hosting providers for different websites I have worked with and I have to say that until December 2013 I was extremely happy with their hosting. In a period of 4 years my website went down just once and the issue was fixed faster than expected. Whenever I needed help from them they were always quick to answer with useful tips and information. Their hosting could be considered the best until December 2013. In December all the websites I hosted at Hostgator were hacked. The brought the websites back up using their backups right after I reported but my websites were hacked a second time soon after. They fixed it again and I changed all my password to find out that 1 website, not all of them anymore, was hacked again in January 2014. After the last website was fixed I haven’t had any issues with them. The hacked websites were marked as malicious websites from google and antivirus softwares and it would have cost me lots of customers if hostgator didn’t perform their server scan for malwares and remove the threads.

In almost a decade I have rarely seen any downtime of our website or our clients’ websites, Currently support request responses are a bit longer than they used to be since, but if a ticket isn’t answered in the time I need I just pick up a phone and call and get the problem solved almost immediately. I Am to the edge of losing my job now due to the worst desision of my life: moving to Bluehost! It was so a terrible mistake, it has been a nightmare since the beginning. I can firmly tell you after talking to one after one after one support agent thay they don’t have the slightest idea of what they are talking about, support agents can barely speak good english (worst than mine), they talk like they are on India or somewhere there, and they are not prepare for REAL TROUBLE, they are just prepared to dumb solutions like: restart your computer, use another browser, it is your ISP problem, for God’s sake! This is a nightmare.

In order to put these hosts to the test, I monitored their uptime for an entire year using Dotcom-Monitor’s ServerView platform. Each website hosted on Bluehost and Hostgator was pinged every 3 hours from multiple datacenters in North America. Testing over a long period of time is important because it helps to create a larger sample size with more data points. 12 months is a fairly long term test when it comes monitoring and this length of time gives a pretty fair assessment of the reliability of a host. Having a test that goes for 12 months ensure that each host had the opportunity to recover from downtime here and there and still have a decent long term average for uptime and reliability of their servers.
Speed: Surprisingly, HostGator’s speed response time test was disappointing. Nevertheless, given the cost of the service, the results are still within reasonable limits. The tests resulted to 45ms average response time for DomainTools and an average of 53ms for Bitctcha’s results. These tests were done from servers based in the US, so the results were as expected. What’s surprising are the speed tests done from servers located at different parts of the globe. Most results came in at an average of 200ms – and with servers from London just going a little above 300ms. Given these numbers, HostGator’s shared web hosting server speeds are average in the US and are impressive abroad.
In terms of pricing for Bluehost, they often have specials that give hosting for under $4/month ($3.49/month at the time of writing), but you generally need to sign up for multiple years at a time in order to get this pricing, and it’s typically not available on renewal. Bluehost usually doesn’t allow people to pay monthly on shared hosting, with a minimum 12-month payment.
I’ve not been a customer of Bluehost, but one of my friends has an account with them for several years. In the past year, my friend’s server kept getting hacked. Upon contacting Bluehost, my friend couldn’t get his site back up despite that Bluehost said they would help. Mind you that my friend is a small business owner who has little knowledge about web stuff, and I believe the majority of hosting account owners are just like him. Therefore, they would naturally turn to their hosting companies for help when things go down. Unfortunately, Bluehost has failed twice in helping him out in the past year, big time.
Bluehost is great for small websites or businesses that are just starting out and can't afford to pay for a better hosting service. They are very affordable, easy to set up, and offer the basics to get a website up and running. The admin area is pretty straightforward and it's very easy to use. Though I'd only recommend them as a last resort if other more reliable hosts aren't affordable for the client at this point in time.

I literally can't state just how happy Blue Host makes me. Everytime I call in, they are super friendly and knowledgeable. I don't have to wait 30 minutes for someone to answer the phone either. Anytime I have an issue, they literally are HAPPY to resolve it. I have yet to speak with someone at Bluehost that was rude or not helpful. THEY ARE GREAT and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND using them.
