Bluehost uses a customized version of the cPanel control panel. cPanel is a popular choice of control panel so many people may already be familiar with its functions. Since cPanel can be difficult to use for people who are not experienced with it, Bluehost's customization is much needed for their inexperienced customers. They have organized the sections and added their own icons to the benefit of the overall appearance of the control panel.
If you haven’t really managed a server before or built a website, I believe that Bluehost makes that experience a little bit easier with better support and a more clearly-organized dashboard. They are a little bit more expensive, but they are a great, full-featured web host and you really can’t go wrong with their shared hosting if you’re just getting started.

I’ve set up websites for clients who use GoDaddy and Bluehost. I currently have 1 website hosted by GoDaddy. I have had nothing but trouble with bluehost. I manage a number of sites, including our company website, and their support was unhelpful at best. My almost brand new (ie, not bogged down) WP installation was dealing with 10-15 second load times, if it would load at all. It was a combination of DB and filesystem issues. And another site was taken offline for almost 3 days due to bluehost’s database issues, and as I was transferring a third away from them, the whole server itself crashed, leaving me without my site’s data for the rest of the day, and the site offline. Their hosting on some of their boxes is simply unreliable, and their databases are even worse.
When I told them about this they immediately offered to refund my money - and they did this pretty fast. Their control panel is very intuitive an even though there are sponsored listings users have the choice to hide those bars. Uptime is also pretty good, and I really enjoy the performance that my blogs give. I can vouch for excellent performance when my blogs got traffic of up to 9000 uniques a day.

Keep in mind that TTFB times are best analyzed as a trend. But as a general rule, I’ve found GoDaddy to be slower than Bluehost. Bluehost is slower than HostGator. And HostGator seems to fluctuate but generally be tied or slightly slower than independent competitors that I also use such as SiteGround (vs. GoDaddy) or InMotion Hosting (vs. GoDaddy).
The company got bonus points for its policy of performing regular daily backups, even on the lowest-priced shared hosting accounts. It lost points because its promotional price on the low-cost shared hosting does go up after the promotional period. That said, Bluehost also gained points for offering 24-7 phone support and SSH access for certain plans.

I started with a plain shared website. Performance was horrible. Was upsold on a more expensive plan, improved somewhat but ended up with a another upsell just to move my site to another server because support was unwilling to help with issue that was plaguing the old server. After a couple month of trouble free time on the new cloud server, issues started popping up again. Frequent server down times or restarts, random reverse proxy or load ballancer timeouts. As soon as I can find a block of time to migrate my web site I am leaving.
