Folks seeking a WordPress website are in need of the WordPress install itself, the domain at which to host the site, and as many easy-to-use features for managing the WordPress site as possible. GoDaddy offers all of the above: the 1-click install, domain, email, security monitoring, and hosting management power via cPanel. Especially for the low, low cost, they're a fine choice for WordPress hosting.
I'm not very good with this kind of stuff but was astonished by how much the student was able to do that BlueHost was not able to do. The student also showed me that there were much cheaper hosting plans I could have gotten, and sure enough he was right, so I don't think the value is great for this host. Bluehost has highly rated customer service and seems to deserve it – although they did come under fire with their response to a DDOS attack in 2015. In a recent incident, they were much more transparent.

The lack of customer service, the lack of motivation to solve problems (a CS rep accidentally canceled the wrong service and it ended up in my email and site going down and wasted advertising dollars as it was during a launch and heavy ad time) My experience with them is HANDS DOWN the worst experience I've had working with any company in the past decade.


Bluehost uses a backend called cPanel for all their accounts – which is the industry standard. Typically, cPanel comes with an unpolished, but straightforward interface. Bluehost has a really polished the backend compared to many other cPanel-based hosts. They’ve organized it with different tabs to reduce the appearance of clutter. They have also added several educational options in addition to the big, green Install WordPress button.

Navigation: Like HostGator, Bluehost also uses the cPanel interface — again this is fairly standard for most web hosts. What makes it different is that the design is more intuitive and modern. Unlike HostGator’s classic cPanel design of menu sidebars and icons, Bluehost has  a more minimalist approach. The service implemented a cleaner look mostly composed of text and almost no clunky icons or clipart can be seen.

On average Bluehost pages take 25% more time to load than pages hosted by other top hosting providers. This time difference may not seem like much, but did you know that almost three quarters of your traffic will bounce if your page fails to load within 5 seconds? Sluggish loading speeds hurt your user experience, thereby decreasing your visitors and your profits. Sure, Bluehost is still far ahead of a lot of smaller web hosts, but they’re at the bottom of the barrel among their top competitors. We’d point to speed as the number one element they could work to fix if they’d like to improve their service. The constant up-sells or teased, handicapped features were loathsome. The support is rather bad. Periodically, our client sites would get wiped out or rolled back to the same point in time. Ever-increasing months of work, lost with nary an explanation from them. Finally, we graduated to tier 2 support we were given some insight into what was going on. One of the best business decisions we made was moving away from Bluehost.

Since cPanel can be difficult to use for people who are not experienced with it, Bluehost's customization is much needed for their inexperienced customers. They have organized the sections and added their own icons to the benefit of the overall appearance of the control panel.
For me Bluehost was quick and easy to use and has responsive and helpful support. Their hosting was easy to setup with enough features and options for my small site. When I first set up my site I needed help with MX record setup for my email and their support team was very knowledgeable and quick to respond. If nothing else, their support was well worth the price.

This, of course, is possible because setting up an account, acquiring a domain, and installing WordPress can all be done from the Bluehost site. First, this entire Bluehost / GoDaddy review (originally published July 16, 2013) has been updated several times (now for February 2018) to account for both GoDaddy’s and Bluehost’s rebrand, new tiers and various other changes. Also, a disclosure: although everything here is based on my experience as a paying customer or consultant to a paying customer, I do receive referral fees from any companies mentioned in this post.
But the path to get here involved a support chat session lasting 45 minutes with someone so horrendous that all I can do is laugh now. To be fair, he must have been dealing with a dozen customers at once but he was so fine with being incompetent that he must have been at his wits end. I decided to abort this chat and look up info elsewhere and things worked out, but had I actually listened to anything he said I would have messed everything up very badly.
What’s more, you can choose to have your site built in the cloud where it will be automatically copied to three devices. So, should one device fail, Bluehost’s “failover” technology automatically designates a copy of your website to the best device as the failed version rebuilds. Therefore, your website remains up and running even in the event of hardware issues at the company.
We believe in our process, but the fact is web hosting can be complicated. The ‘best’ changes depending on need. The Godfather is one of the best films of all time, but you wouldn’t watch it if you fancied having a laugh. It’s the same with hosting. There are better services than iPage hosting, but if you wanted a super cheap plan with solid support, they’re worth considering.
Second, GoDaddy provides a ton of services beyond hosting. They were originally founded as a domain registrar, but now provide a huge range of business services. I’ve also written how their domain services compare to NameCheap and how their hosting compares to InMotion and SiteGround. But it’s important to “weight” your desire for convenience across a range of business products in addition to your desire for the best web hosting choice.
Even the delay of minutes (if not seconds) in online business can harm you a lot. The competition is tough and you might just miss a golden opportunity while waiting for the support representative’s email respond. You should always choose a host that provides 24X7 telephonic support and BlueHost does that too. Besides, they also offer the 24X7 live chat and email support.
Overall Bluehost meets our needs and the price is right. As a small not-for-profit our needs started out pretty simple. We are currently changing and expanding our web presence and I am hopeful that Bluehost will be able to continue to provide what we need. I have had good luck with support with one exception. My home IP was blocked and I was unable to access the site from my house for over a week. I work from home so it was a big deal. They kept saying it was my ISP when it actually was being blocked by Bluehost. I jumped through many firey hoops before it was finally fixed.
